At Ullswater Community College, our curriculum is the engine of our ambition.

It is more than a list of subjects; it is a carefully designed seven-year journey that provides the knowledge, skills, and qualifications for future success, while also building the character and resilience needed to thrive in a modern world.

We call it the Success Curriculum because its purpose is clear: to equip every child with the tools they need to compete on a local, regional, and national stage, and to live fulfilling and successful lives. It is how we bring our commitment to being “Best in County” to life for every student, every day.

Our Curriculum Intent

(Why we teach what we teach)

Our intention is to provide an excellent, inclusive education that empowers every student to achieve their full potential. We are fiercely ambitious for all, and our curriculum is designed to inspire a genuine passion for learning while providing the cultural capital and core knowledge necessary for success in life. Beyond qualifications, the Success Curriculum is designed to explicitly develop four key pillars:

Excellence in Character

We develop depth of character by fostering resilience, optimism, and generosity. This is embedded in the positive relationships between staff and students and is central to our PSHE, assembly, and tutor programmes, which promote fundamental British values of democracy, respect, and liberty.

Social Responsibility

We create considerate and mindful citizens who understand their role in our school, our local community, and the wider world. This is woven into all teaching and learning and is promoted through our active student council, cross-curricular events, and charitable work.

Confident Independence

We empower students to take ownership of their own growth and development. Our lessons and feedback processes encourage initiative and reflection, enabling students to feel a deep sense of satisfaction in their own progress and achievements.

Ambitious Challenge

We challenge every student to pursue excellence and do everything as well as it can be done. Our curriculum facilitates high standards for all abilities, with an individualised approach that allows every student to thrive. The most able are stretched, while those who need additional support have it expertly built into their programme.

Our Curriculum Implementation
(How we teach our curriculum)

The Success Curriculum is delivered through ambitious, research-driven teaching that brings learning to life. Our talented staff find and close gaps in student learning, ensuring that knowledge is secure, lasting, and well-organised.

Key Stage 3 (Years 7-9): Building Strong Foundations

We are proud to offer a full, three-year Key Stage 3. This gives our students the time and space to explore a truly broad and balanced range of subjects, ensuring they build a deep and secure foundation of knowledge before making their GCSE choices.

All students experience the full breadth of the National Curriculum, including creative and performing arts, technology, humanities, two modern languages, and computing. This rich experience allows them to discover new passions and develop a rounded, comprehensive worldview.

As a school with specialist provision for students with complex learning needs, we are experts in tailoring the curriculum. Students are taught in groups that best suit their learning needs in core subjects, and we provide targeted support in reading, literacy and numeracy to ensure every child can make accelerated progress.

Key Stage 4 (Years 10-11): Pathways to Success

Our Key Stage 4 curriculum offers a superb range of pathways, ensuring a personalised and ambitious route for every student. The curriculum consists of a compulsory academic core alongside three option choices, allowing for significant personalisation.

We offer a wide range of different courses, ranging from the full English Baccalaureate (EBacc) suite of GCSEs to a wide array of high-quality technical qualifications. This ensures that students wishing to pursue a purely academic route are challenged and prepared for top universities, while those with different talents and aspirations can build an equally ambitious and successful pathway.

Expert careers guidance is at the heart of our options process, ensuring every student makes informed, aspirational choices that align with their potential and future goals.

Key Stage 5 (UCC Sixth): Your Pathway to Excellence

Our ambitious curriculum extends into UCC Sixth, a place where students can specialise and prepare for the most competitive destinations. We offer a diverse and flexible range of qualifications to suit all aspirations.

  • Academic Excellence: A broad selection of A-Levels provides the rigorous academic grounding required for entry to elite universities, including Oxbridge and the Russell Group.
  • Technical and Vocational Pathways: We offer high-quality technical qualifications that provide an equally valid and ambitious route to university, higher apprenticeships, or direct employment.

This is delivered through outstanding teaching in smaller class sizes, alongside expert guidance on university (UCAS) and apprenticeship applications. The curriculum is tailored to ensure every student can build a programme of study that will open doors to their chosen future.

Our Curriculum Impact: (The difference our curriculum makes)

The impact of the Success Curriculum is evident in our students. They leave UCC not just with excellent qualifications, but as well-rounded, confident, and articulate young adults, ready for the next stage of their lives.

Our students:

  • Achieve excellent qualifications that open doors to the most competitive post-16 pathways, including our own Sixth Form, other colleges, and apprenticeships.
  • Possess deep and lasting knowledge across a wide range of disciplines, allowing them to think critically and remember more for longer.
  • Demonstrate excellent character, showing resilience, compassion, and a strong sense of social responsibility.
  • Are confident, independent learners who are prepared for the demands of further education and the modern workplace.
  • Are happy, caring, and active citizens ready to make a positive contribution to British society.
