Protocol and process

Our aim is to ensure that we have a robust, fair protocol and process for the awarding of teacher assessed grades across GCSE and A Level qualification, where grades are based on secure evidence of student attainment, taking into consideration mock examinations, classwork and any completed NEA units.

The following represents a condensed summary of the school’s 28 step approach to ensuring the security of our Centre Assessed Grades.

• Initial predictions made alongside CPG3 the initial predictions were updated by class teachers when school closure was announced.
• We made an initial check of the prediction using nation benchmarks for different qualifications.
• After Ofqual and the Department for Education released guidance, we used training from national organistaions such as the SSAT to calibrate our approach to awarding Centre Assessed Grades.
• We designed a process which met the requirements of the DfE guidance where teachers and subject leaders should use a range of passed assessment information, including mock examinations and coursework. Heads of Departments used a wide range of national and historic data to calibrate the grades they were awarding.
• Heads of subject led meetings with their teams following the school’s protocol for grading and rankings. These initial CAGs and rankings were then collated and analysed against historic data from school and national results.
• Head of subject and the link managers scrutinised this data alongside Mr Gilby (headteacher) and Mr Moss (Assistant Headteacher in charge of Assessment), ensuring that all was found in evidence. Subject leaders were given the opportunity to reflect on and refine data where appropriate.
• Update data was sent to national data analysis organisation including Fisher Family Trust, Alps and SISRA to quality assure our data against other schools.
• Any remaining queries raised with middle leaders.
• Subject leads and at least one other teacher involved in CAG/rankings sign of on process.
• Grades and rankings are prepared for submissions.
• Grades and rankings submitted to awarding bodies. These go through three levels of internal checks.
• All elements of UCC process signed off by Mr Gilby (headteacher) and Mr Moss (Assistant Headteacher in charge of Assessment) prior to final submission to exam board.
