PSHE/RSHE at UCC aims to inspire students to engage with the world, to understand how it works and to grow into strong, well-balanced members of society. Students are encouraged to play an active role in lessons so that they develop skills of negotiation, diplomacy and debate, as well as resilience and leadership.
Key Stage 3
PSHE creates the learning environment to help students learn about, be supported by, reflect on and challenge issues people face as they live; such as mental health, bullying, British values, body image, puberty, alcohol and drugs, work and money, stress and inspirational people.
Key Stage 4
PSHE at KS4 addresses the same themes, but in a more grown up way. Intent & implementation
Following the guidelines from the PSHE Association, our intent for the PSHE curriculum at UCC is to give students the tools and confidence to navigate safely within the world as positive, active citizens.
Our intent is to give students the opportunity to be critical thinkers and explore the importance of relationships (on and offline), health and wellbeing, diversity and inclusion, British Values and economic stewardship. Our intent is to be inclusive and to build resilience and awareness so that our students feel equipped to deal with the wider world during their time in education and beyond.
The delivery of PSHE is established through high quality teaching, built on the foundations of collaboration and equality from students. Curriculum maps are designed to be exciting and relevant to students, directly impacting their decision-making and overall wellness. Although our curriculum is fully planned and resourced, they are dynamic to reflect ongoing local, national and global issues.
Throughout different schemes of work in each stage of learning, Philosophy for Children and experiential learning are at the heart of engaging all learners to feel safe to explore viewpoints freely without judgement, to be confident and inquisitive, to enjoy enquiry and debate, and will use what they have learnt to achieve good outcomes and become responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to their communities, society and the world.
Developing Cultural Capital
The development of cultural capital is what citizenship, PSHE and tutor time PSHE is all about at UCC. Through carefully planned, resourced and sequenced lessons students explore local, national and global current issues and the question of what it means to be a global citizen. We address the biggest issues, including- equality, diversity, belonging, RSE, CSE, careers, drugs, British Values, extremism and intolerance. Although carefully sequenced and planned, our teaching and learning is dynamic and we respond to issues and support our students in developing resilience and understanding.
Extracurricular opportunities
The Student Council is incredibly popular, enabling students to have their say in how the school is run and providing them with the opportunity to work with others to create a school, and a world, to be proud of.
We also run events such as the recent visit by Brandon Hunt, and previously the band The Shades, who performed for students and gave talks about cyber-bullying and E-Safety.
Careers Education
Citizenship and PSHE at UCC delivers career education through a carefully planned, resourced sequence of lessons with the aim of developing ambition and a sense of curiosity about the world of work, their own potential and what they need to do to achieve the best outcomes so they can go on to be successful, prosperous, responsible global citizens.
In Key stage 3 students are allocated half a term to use on line resources which enables them to explore the world of work, to understand the demands and expectations of the working world. This program guides students through the process of creating the most suited curriculum path to enable them to achieve their career aspirations.
