Remote Education Provision

Information for parents

This information is intended to provide clarity and transparency to pupils and parents or carers about what to expect from remote education if local restrictions require entire cohorts (or bubbles) to remain at home.
For details of what to expect where individual pupils are self-isolating, please see the final section of this page.

Will my child be taught broadly the same curriculum as they would if they were in school?

Yes – we aim to teach the curriculum as we do in school, wherever possible and appropriate. However, we may need to make some adaptations in subjects such as technology, music, physical education, dance and drama which have more practical components.

How long can I expect work set by the school to take my child each day?

We provide work that replicates the school timetable of six 50 minute lessons. This means that students should expect to receive 5 hours of work each day.

How will my child access any online remote education you are providing?

At UCC, we deliver our online learning using Google Classroom. Students can access Google Classroom through www.rmunify.com , logging in with using their school email address and password. The convention for their school email address is firstname.surname@ullswatercc.co.uk .

If your child has difficulty logging in to Google Classroom, they should contact IThelp@ullswatercc.co.uk

Alternatively, use the contact form at the bottom of the page.

If my child does not have digital or online access at home, how will you support them to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils may not have suitable online access at home. We take the following approaches to support those pupils to access remote education:

  • Laptops can be loaned from the school to families who meet eligibility criteria. For more information, contact admin@ullswatercc.co.uk
  • The school has a supply of routers and dongles that can be loaned to families who do not have internet access and meet eligibility criteria. For more information, contact admin@ullswatercc.co.uk
  • Printed resources are available upon request. Please contact admin@ullswatercc.co.uk for more information.
  • Students can submit work to their teachers if they do not have access to the internet. This can be done by dropping off work at school. Please contact admin@ullswatercc.co.uk to arrange this in advance.

How will my child be taught remotely?

We use a combination of the following approaches to teach pupils remotely:

  • Live lessons through Google Meet (online lessons)
  • Recorded teaching
  • Structured learning materials (such as Powerpoint presentations, workbooks and worksheets)
  • Textbooks and reading books that pupils have at home
  • Commercially available websites that support the teaching of specific subjects

What are your expectations for my child’s engagement and the support that we as parents and carers should provide at home?

Home-school links are vitally important in supporting the progress of learnings. We would value your support in ensuring that pupils are accessing online learning and helping them establish good learning routines.

How will you check whether my child is engaging with their work and how will I be informed if there are concerns?

Students will be set work as Assignments, which they will be expected to turn in once they are completed. This helps us track the engagement of students and provide feedback on their learning. We will also track engagement using our ATL system. This will allow parents and carers to see engagement through ClassCharts. Furthermore, parents and carers can ask teachers to add their email address to Google Classrooms to received a summary of activity each day.

How will you assess my child’s work and progress?

Feedback can take many forms and may not always mean extensive written comments for individual children. For example, whole-class feedback or quizzes marked automatically via digital platforms are also valid and effective methods, amongst many others. Our approach to feeding back on pupil work follows our normal school marking policy however, all submitted work through Google Classroom will be checked.

How will you work with me to help my child who needs additional support from adults at home to access remote education?

We recognise that some pupils, for example some pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), may not be able to access remote education without support from adults at home. We acknowledge the difficulties this may place on families, and we will work with parents and carers to support those pupils in the following ways:

  • Learning Support Staff will be included in the Google Classrooms of students that they work with on a regular basis. They will be available to support pupils with their learning.
  • Teachers will differentiate resources as appropriate to support the progress of all pupils.
  • Teachers are available via email to discuss the support that students might need.

If my child is not in school because they are self-isolating, how will their remote education differ from the approaches described above?

Where individual pupils need to self-isolate but the majority of their peer group remains in school, how remote education is provided will likely differ from the approach for whole groups. This is due to the challenges of teaching pupils both at home and in school.

Students can expect to have access to meaningful lesson material through Google Classroom within 24 hours of their lesson taking place. Students should communicate with their teacher and submit their work via email or Google Classroom as appropriate.
