‘The Applied Learning Centre comprises of Hair & Beauty, Animal Care and Agriculture.

In each area of applied learning, students are encouraged to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required in professional settings of each discipline. Students are encouraged to develop these professional attributes through a combination of practical activity and theory work. They learn how to work as a team and how to work independently, solving problems linked to real-life context.

At present, applied learning is available in Key Stage 4 where students follow L2 vocational qualifications in each discipline. Each qualification requires students to complete work that is continually assessed which will test their practical skills and theoretical understanding. In addition, students will complete examination components based on the theory that they have learned which will contribute to their final grade.

Vocational qualifications within the Applied Learning Centre are also available at Entry Level for those students where this type of course is more appropriate.

Cultural capital is developed through our applied learning courses by pupils being encouraged to be
knowledgeable about a range of culture and values. Pupils are encouraged to build character
building qualities that lead to the world at work. Pupils are encouraged to be knowledgeable citizens
who have a good understanding and appreciation of what it means to have a career and to
contribute to society.

Each of the areas within the Applied Learning Centre offer extra-curricular opportunities such as trips to events like the Westmorland Show, clubs such as the Green Power racing car project and community projects which include supporting the school’s annual productions.

Our curriculum aims to engage pupils with potential careers by referring to the ‘bigger
picture’. We reference industrial practises in our schemes of learning to deepen pupils
understanding of how the world that surrounds us works.
In Year 10 and 11 we offer advice and guidance about potential routes to post 16 that will
lead onto chosen careers.
