Dear Parent/Carer
The school currently has two vacancies for parents to serve on the Governing Body and I am writing to encourage parents/carers to nominate themselves to fill these places. Details of how to nominate yourself are given at the end of this email.
Parent governors are parents of, or those with parental responsibility for, pupils registered at Ullswater Community College. They are elected by other parents and play a vital role on the governing body, sharing equally with other governors the responsibility for carrying out the governing body’s wide range of responsibilities.
The governors’ role is to make decisions about the overall character of the school, its strategic development and to set out its values and policies on different issues – governors do not run the school on a day-to-day basis – and so you do not have to be an expert on education to be a school governor. We value the breadth of experience that all governors bring to the role.
If you join the Governing Body, you will serve for a 4-year term and you can continue to the end of the 4 years even if your child/children leave the school. Being a governor does take up time. There are six governing body meetings each year and governors usually serve on a sub-committee that meets about twice a term. You will be given training and a mentor to help you learn the role.

If you are interested in joining the Governing Body, please send a brief letter nominating yourself and countersigned by two sponsors – who should be parents of a child/children currently at the school – to the Clerk to the Governing Body, Eleanor Flood, by the end of the school day on Monday 12 October 2020.
Please do not give biographical details at this point as these will be needed only if a vote is necessary. If this happens, you will be asked to provide more information about your relevant experience and why you wish to serve as a parent governor. These details will be circulated to all those who are entitled to vote in the secret ballot.
