Year 12 Work Experience

By 30 March 2023No Comments

Dear Parent/Carer

This year we are excited, for the first time in three years, to be offering work experience to year 12 and this will take place between Monday 3 July and Friday 7 July 2023 inclusive.  We feel that our students have shown great resilience over recent years, but they have also missed out on a whole range of the typical milestones to prepare them for their futures. The opportunity to participate in a high-quality work experience is an incredibly valuable part of preparation for life after Sixth Form and will provide them with:

  • increased self-understanding, maturity, independence and self-confidence
  • increased motivation to continue study and/or undertake further training
  • an understanding of the work environment and what employers expect of their workers
  • an opportunity to explore possible career options
  • a better understanding of how the school curriculum can help prepare young people for work
  • enhanced opportunities for part-time and casual employment
  • the opportunity to include the employer’s work experience evaluation in future job and course applications
  • opportunities to develop work-related competencies and acquire skills
  • the chance to ‘try out’ a workplace.

Through our partnership with Cumbria Work Experience  (https://cumbria.work-experience.co.uk/), all work experience placements will be checked for all aspects of health and safety for the protection of our students and all others in the workplaces they attend.

Students are currently in the process of finding and securing work experience placements. They have been doing this with support from their form tutors. To further assist students, we have created a support booklet that is linked here. Students have also been provided with a hard copy of this document.

The deadline for students to arrange their work experience placement is Friday 28 April 2023. If your child is struggling to find a placement, they must contact Mrs Jones, Careers Coordinator, at the earliest opportunity, and she will be happy to help.

Yours faithfully

Mr R Jackson, Head of Sixth Form
Mrs C Jones, Careers Coordinator
